You know how little girls like to play dress up with their dolls? Or how mothers with daughters get to buy cute, ruffly dresses and bows for them to wear? Well, I’m a mom of boys, and the definition of playing dress up around here involves super hero costumes with masks and a weapon. Still cute, but not quite the same. 🙂
That’s part of the reason I think I love interior design and decorating my farmhouse so much. It allows me to be creative and try different things, and I’ve noticed that my style lately has leaned more towards a much more feminine, softer vintage farmhouse feel. I adore the industrial look of hard metal and dark rustic wood, but at this stage of my life (newly single) my heart is drawn more to soft lace and ruffles and faded wood tones and light, bright white spaces. I’ve noticed that my design choices have been slowly softening our home, and I love the blend of feminine romance and vintage farmhouse that is happening.
I think it all started when I designed my master bedroom…
The lace curtain I added from the faux wood beam completely changed the look and feel of this space. You can see how I installed the wood and curtain here.
I wanted to carry more of that softer vintage charm throughout the rest of the house, so I switched out my old shower curtain for a darling lace floret curtain.
And in the kitchen, I took down the old striped sheer curtains on the windows and hung these tea rose lace panels.
You may also remember the lace peony table runner I created in the dining room by simply cutting a stretch of lace to fit the table and tying a loose knot on the ends.
I’m sure to many people, this probably looks like “grandma” style… lace and crochet and ruffles. And it honestly makes me laugh a little bit when I think about it since I’m only 29 years old. But I love the vintage feel of all these design elements, and I don’t care what style you call it… it’s me and I embrace it!
I find that my style evolves over time with my age, my mood, my experiences… that is what makes design SO interesting and inspiring to me. It tells a story of who you are and the people that live in your home. Don’t be worried about what the latest decor trends are or what your neighbor or best friend or anyone else is doing. Do what feels like YOU. And if you try something and it doesn’t feel right… keep playing dress up with your house and try on a new look until you find the right fit. I hope you enjoyed seeing the next chapter of my little farmhouse!

I love the lacy curtain in the bedroom and bathroom. It softens your spaces and makes them look completely new. Beautiful!
If it were my choice, your beautiful bedroom would be the top design picture! I loved how you did it for Christmas too. This is just THE most beautiful bedroom I’ve ever seen (most of your home makes me feel that way, lol). It’s wonderful that you have that to settle into during the rough times. Those times will pass and an even better future will emerge. I speak from 74 years of experience and some rough spots myself! So often, the things that look and feel the worst can turn into the biggest blessings when you look back over time. I promise. Many blessings.
Your home is stunning – warm, soft, light – and the lace and crochet touches are, to my mind, perfect. Thank you for sharing.
Breathtakingly Beautiful!!
Where is the circular rug in the bathroom from? I love it!
Your home is absolutely beautiful. So welcoming and fresh, not old fashioned at all.
I love all your subtle changes that are an expression of you. I remember when I was about your age and my mom couldn’t believe I liked doilies and crocheted things!! She truly thought it looked old lady!!! I did save my Grandma’s doilies and some I bought. I use a few of them to remember my Grandma who was not old acting at all. She’d be 126 now!!! But I agree. No one would walk into your space and think old. It looks fresh and new!! You do have a creative talent. I enjoy your ambitions changes to your home.
Very beautiful! Soft, clean, a bit feminine, but definitely not grandma-ish. I think the uncluttered feel keeps it far from that. And actually, I am a grandma, and I think there should be a new definition of “grandma” these days!
Love your decorating!
I don’t think its Grandma Style at all. Or as we say in the South, it doesn’t look at all Mamawy!!!
Its simple and quite elegant. There’s a lot to be said for that in my opinion. But if I had to put a label on it…….lets go with Prarie :)). About you life change? You hang in there Liz, you’ve got a lot to offer to this world . Now, let’s hear and see something of your little shop. I can not wait:)

Your home is beautiful! I want it all for myself!

Soft, feminine, cozy and lovely. Looks like a beautiful place to call Home!
Blessings to you,

I absolutely love everything! We will hopefully be downsizing in the next few months and I am inspired to have a neutral house with lots of white because of you. I kept my eye on a light blue hutch at a local antique mall and when it came into my price range I snatched it up and painted it white-Swiss Coffee. Love your style (I have your book and your blog is in my top favorite 3). Your little farmhouse is just lovely. 🙂
You deserve some feminine touches around your home! I used to have lace curtains in a previous home at my kitchen window that faced the driveway. Everyone who came over or into the driveway complemented me on those curtains. I missed them when we moved. Love yours.
I absolutely LOVE your style. Thank you for sharing and inspiring!
curious about the shade of white you used to paint walls — It does not seem as stark as many whites
Love your home! Since the bathroom mirror is discontinued, have you seen similar mirrors anywhere?
Your home looks wonderful and so inviting! I especially like the dark grout in the kitchen. It really makes the subway tiles standout!
Loved the interior of the kitchen, really great idea of using the white color for interiors and curtains it offers peace to mind and softens the mood.
