Because you should never take life too seriously!
Over the last few months, my office has gone from dark and depressing to bright and inspiring… have you seen the “before” photos yet? If not, you must click here! As I was finishing up the final details of this room, I realized the modern glam vision I had for my office just wasn’t quite “me” enough. I needed a little more shabby to go with all the chic. Hence, today’s project was born.
After rearranging the furniture in here, I realized that hanging a mirror above my mint green desk was the BEST decision ever. It helps me catch the little bits of spinach in my teeth from my post-workout smoothie, but MORE importantly, it gives me the perfect place to take a great selfie. Let’s face it… I’m a blogger, I’m obsessed with Instagram, and on the rare day that I actually do my hair and makeup, I like to share it with you guys. Call me vain… but I love a good selfie. And let’s be honest here… you know you do too. 🙂
I’ve teased my husband for months that I was going to put a #selfie sign above that mirror, and the other day as I was rummaging through my pile of scrap wood, I discovered an old 2×4 that had perfectly-aged chippy white paint all over it… my #selfie sign was meant to be! This new piece of art in my office added the perfect amount of rustic, shabby chic charm that I was looking for, plus a whole lot of sass. It makes me smile every time I sit down at my desk and reminds me to laugh and not take life too seriously.
The process to make this sign was super simple:
- Buy/make a stencil. *I used my Silhouette Cameo to make a vinyl stencil.
- Paint on the letters.
- Add mounting hardware on the back and hang it up! *I used two sawtooth hangers.
To make my desk extra shabby-chic, I swapped out the square glass vase I had for a galvanized metal one and added a pine tray and an antler. (See the more modern look I had before.)
The modern gold and white desk lamp I had got replaced with this glass thrift store find that I painted with chalk paint and sanded down to expose the details. Cute, charming, and much more “me”.
So tell me… what do YOU think of the new shabby-chic look? Do you like my sign? I realize it’s probably not something everyone wants to hang in their home, but I hope I’ve inspired you to laugh a little more today and…
… take a SELFIE!
