Neutral Christmas Living Room

A beautiful farmhouse living room decorated in soft neutrals for the holidays!

So far in the Seasons of Home holiday series, I’ve shared our winter wonderland Christmas kitchen and a very sweet holiday dessert tablescape in the dining room, but today I’m giving you a tour of probably the most exciting space to decorate for Christmas… our living room! This is the room where the big tree gets put up and we open presents on Christmas morning and curl up and watch Elf and the Grinch together, so it’s safe to say that I probably enjoy decorating this space the most each year since we spend the most time in here.

If there is one childhood memory that stands out the most during the holidays, it is being in the living room with all the lights out except for the lights on the tree and listening to Bob Seger sing Little Drummer Boy, Stevie Nicks croon Silent Night, and Whitney Houston belt Do You Hear What I Hear. I still listen to those songs every year as I put up the tree and turn on the lights for the first time with the boys. It’s simple and magical and memorable, and I hope to share this feeling of home, comfort and happiness with you as I take you on a little tour of our Christmas living room this year.

The focal point of the room is of course the Christmas tree, and I am so excited with how it turned out this year. I decided it was time to retire the old tree and start fresh with a new one, and I have all the details of the tree and trimmings here. I love how the neutral color scheme and elegant, but cozy style fits right in with our farmhouse, and this spot right next my big hutch was perfect so I can see the tree from the living room, dining room and kitchen too!

You all know that I try to keep my holiday decorating as simple as possible, although I used a lot of my favorite Christmas items from over the years like my handmade stockings hung on the ladder I built, I also picked up some new items from HomeGoods recently that I just adore. I am obsessed with these birch log candle holders, and I grabbed one in pretty much every size they had. I nestled three of them on a wood tray with some white trees, which became a perfect centerpiece on my coffee table and makes the room feel so cozy. I love that I can also keep these out all winter long because they’re not strictly Christmas decorations.

I also picked out some new warm blankets, which I do almost every year because it is such an easy way to add coziness for the holidays and winter. I even found a gray one with adorable white moose all over it, and since I’ve always called my youngest son Moose, I had to get it. By the way, am I the only one that feels like it should be moosES in that last sentence? haha

Along with the cozy new blankets, I found some adorable new pillows at HomeGoods… a lush taupe velvet and a wintery white faux fur that look great on our couches and sitting chair by the hutch. I like to decorate our home more with texture and color and mood than with the most obvious Christmas decorations, and velvet and fur instantly gave the feeling of holiday and winter to our living room. It never ceases to amaze me how just a few pillows can completely change our everyday casual style into something special for the season.

You know that book about the horrible no good, ver You know that book about the horrible no good, very bad day? That was yesterday over here. 😂 I won’t go through the list of terrible bad things that ended with needing a generator at almost 11 pm, only to have power restored approximately 5 minutes after finally getting said generator... 🤦🏼‍♀️

because things always could have been worse & after a good night of sleep, my attitude for this new day is much better. I have a Spring Market to prepare for at @lovegrowswildmarket this weekend, some fun projects coming up next week, and I have POWER today so I can accomplish all the things. Life is good!

Tell me I’m not the only one who occasionally has one of those “I couldn’t make this up if I tried” horrible no good very bad days...

Here’s something helpful 😂:

This dish has all the goodness of a classic lasagna, but with a much more simple cooking method. Instead of making separate layers and baking the lasagna in the oven, I add everything to a large pan and cook it right on the stove… meat, noodles, sauce, and all! The cheeses go in right at the end to give that creamy finish to the dish, and the whole meal is ready in under 30 minutes. I like to add a salad and some garlic bread to go with it!

Be sure to read my notes in the recipe for easy swaps to make this dish on the lighter side!

It’s hard to believe how this kitchen looked jus It’s hard to believe how this kitchen looked just five years ago (swipe to see)

Taking out an old chimney to make room for a pantry cabinet and opening up the wall between the living room & kitchen were two of the biggest changes we made, and I’m so glad I committed to making those projects happen... despite concerns from my contractor that this would limit the space for a massive tv in the living room. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Classic case of a man’s design priorities vs. a woman’s. 😂 Tell me one thing in your home that you and your partner don’t agree on! This should be entertaining. 🤣
