Rustic Winter White Mantel

All my holiday decor has been put away for awhile now, but my normal home decor hasn’t found its way back out yet. Actually, if I’m being totally honest, it has all been sitting in a big pile on the floor by my fireplace. I just haven’t found time yet to dress the house back up again!
Well today I decided I was tired of staring at all my pretty stuff on the floor, so I set up a simple Winter White Mantel that can stay up for the next few months.
I created the mantel 100% from things I already had. I used one of my absolute favorite up-cycle projects: my metal star covered with twigs. You can find that tutorial here!
That project didn’t cost me a penny, and I love the texture and rustic quality it adds to my decor!
To add to the rustic winter theme, I filled tall cylinder vases with more branches from my yard and added a sprig of ice crystal branches from my Christmas decor.
The center of my mantel display is an old gold frame that I spray painted white. I made a sweet little banner out of twine, white burlap, and white fabric I had leftover from other projects and hung it across the top corner of the frame.
{ T I P } Frames of all shapes and sizes make great back drops when decorating!
On the other side of the mantel I stacked a few small books that I covered with paper for a unified look. I wrote lyrics to one of my favorite songs on the spines of the books… it’s all in the details! You can find the tutorial for my lyric book covers here.

I placed a small bird (found at Michael’s) sitting on a doily on top of the books. I love layering! I also set a feather my son found inside a curvy glass vase as a nod to the little birdy.
Isn’t he cute?

It is very simple, but by layering items in the same color palette, I was able to create a beautiful, natural mantel with things I already had!
I think this picture really shows how beautiful white can be when layered with different textures:
So what do you think? Do you stick with whites and neutrals or do you need COLOR in your decor?

Honey I like it all, I mean all colors, however that is very attractive.
I always think white is so pretty, I really like your books where you have covered them in white and wrote on edges

I love this together. I don’t NEED color but I love color. White is always a nice highlight to use. For example I love using red black and white together. I am in love with that frame. I would have used some colored fabric instead of the white and burlap though. Also, I’m hosting a giveaway on my blog (it ends Tuesday) if you’d like to come by and check it out that would be excellent!
