January always feels like a fresh start to me after the busyness of the holidays, and almost every year I find myself taking this month as an opportunity to refresh spaces in our home that feel like a blank canvas now that Christmas is over. I’ve been busy making lots of little changes in our living room that I’ll be blogging about soon, but first I wanted to show you guys some updates I made in my master bedroom that has me falling in love with this space all over again…
Step inside, sweet friends.
Many elements in this room have stayed the same over the years…
my dark iron bed frame that contrasts beautifully against the white planks we installed all the way up the sloped walls
the faux wood beam I dreamt up to hang soft lace curtains from
simple wood nightstands with a swing arm lamp hanging above
lots of white, lots of light, and lots of cozy
But I was craving a bit of change in here too, so before Christmas I moved my mantel upstairs to the bedroom, and this is the first time I’ve been able to style it without all the Christmas greenery and decorations. I love the simplicity of the warm wood tones with a little bit of greenery and a small piece of art hanging on the wall above. I wasn’t sure if or how the mantel would fit up here with the short, sloped walls, but it turned out to be the perfect piece for this wall and makes the space feel extra cozy.
One of my goals this year is to add more photos and artwork in our house, and I started with some old black and white family photos and the perfect artwork on the wall to wake up to every morning…
“Here’s to the ones who DREAM”
I’m working on a blog post all about how to find inexpensive artwork and get it printed and framed, so stay tuned for that big post! But this printable piece of art I found here on Etsy, and I love how it combines my love of clean, light design, the hard work I put into my business, and the sweet “dream” message that is perfect for a bedroom. I literally squealed when I found it!
A few other small changes I made were adding a small rug at the foot of the bed (from here), and indulging my love of Joanna Gaines and buying some bedding that was just adding to her Hearth & Hand line at Target. I got this comforter set that has subtle seersucker stripes and black embroidered stitching that gives the bedding such a pretty textured vintage look. I just happened to come across it when I was checking out the new additions to her Hearth & Hand line and almost immediately ordered the set. It’s exactly the vibe I’m going for in my bedroom, and I haven’t seen anything else like it! I tucked the comforter underneath my ruffled white duvet, and it’s the perfect touch of subtle pattern that the room needed, along with the stripes on the rug I picked up.
I have noticed that some sizes of this bedding has been selling out quickly (and so far eventually get restocked), so if you are interested in possibly buying the set, I wouldn’t wait. There are more pretty bedding options from her line here!
Normally this bedroom doesn’t get a ton of light since it just has one small window, but with all the snow outside, it has filled the room with sunshine so much more lately. If there is any place in the world you should never want to leave, it should be your bedroom, and this space definitely does that for me!

Hello- I love the swing arm lamps, but see that they are bronze. They look black in your photos. Did you paint them or if not how do they look with the black iron frame bed- thanks so much
Hi Leslie! They are oil rubbed bronze, which tends to look black in shadows. I didn’t paint them, but I think they are such a dark bronze that they coordinate well with either black or bronze! I hope this helps. 🙂
Liz, I will show you WHAT I don’t know – can I use the ruffled duet with ruffle without and insert? I want it as a coverlet! HELP me.
Are the whites of the cover and the lace curtains the same look?
Hi friend! For the duvet you would want an insert because the duvet cover is just thin fabric. I will keep my eye out for a ruffled coverlet!
Looks lovely, simple but lovely and love your sign and the plant on your fireplace.
Always love seeing your bedroom. It really looks cozy with the added fireplace. But it occurred to me I see no storage for clothes is why you have made this space work. I am curious Where do you keep your clothes an shoes?
Thank you, Peggy! The room is sort of long and narrow, and on the left as soon as you walk in the door is my closet. It’s nothing exciting to look at, so it usually doesn’t make it into photos, but I keep all my clothes and shoes in there!
Please share where the bench/stool at the foot of the bed came from. Thank you.
Hi Linda! I actually built that bench from a tutorial in my book, A Touch of Farmhouse Charm!
Liz,
Your bedroom looks wonderful! I loved the new Magnolia comforter so much that I bought one and it is just perfect in my bedroom. What a great find….thank you!
Even though the dimensions of your bedroom seems small, the design and color combination is astonishing. Loved this idea!
Thanks so much for your idea. Great tips!
