It’s been a while since I last shared an update on my master bedroom makeover after we did a big bedroom swap in the house. But now that summer is winding down, I’m feeling the urge to wrap this space up so I can have the ultimate cozy retreat before winter hits.
My first focus was decorating the wall above my bed. Between the creamy white walls and ivory linen upholstered bed frame, everything felt a little too bland and honestly just unfinished. I wanted something that would bring warmth, coziness, and a focal point to the room. I ended up hanging one large statement canvas with dark, moody tones, and I love how it cozies up the space and ties in with the other darker elements I’ve used throughout the room.
There are so many ways to decorate above a bed, and I’m sharing all the ideas I considered (plus a few extras) so you can find the perfect look for your own bedroom to make it feel complete. I’d love to hear which is your favorite – tell me in the comments!
One Large Statement Piece
A single oversized artwork piece instantly anchors your bed as the focal point of the room.
- Size tip: Choose a piece about ⅔–¾ the width of your bed and hang it so the bottom edge sits 6–10 inches above the headboard.
Symmetrical Pairing
Two matching frames hung side-by-side give a balanced, calming look.
- Size tip: Each frame should be about half the width of your headboard area, with 2–4 inches of space in between.
- Style tip: Botanical prints, abstract pairs, or minimalist photography all work beautifully here.
Triptych (Three-Piece Set)
A triptych can be one image split across three panels or three coordinating pieces.
- Size tip: Together, the panels should span ⅔–¾ of your bed’s width with about 2 inches between each.
Grid Gallery
For a clean, structured feel, try a grid of smaller frames.
- Size tip: Keep total width in that ⅔–¾ range and space frames 2–3 inches apart.
- Style tip: Identical frames and mats keep the look cohesive.
Asymmetrical Gallery Wall
If your style leans more casual and collected, go asymmetrical with a variety of frame styles.
- Size tip: Center the grouping over the bed so the overall visual mass still fits the ⅔–¾ width guideline.
- Style tip: Check out this post and this post for detailed tutorials on how to curate and hang a gallery wall in this style.
Textile or Fabric Art
Use textiles like tapestries, framed fabric art, macrame, quilts, or even a small vintage rug to bring warmth and texture above your bed.
- Size tip: Choose a piece about ½ the width of your bed so it feels balanced without overwhelming the space.
- Style tip: Soft, muted colors or subtle patterns keep the look cozy and sophisticated.
Floating Shelf + Leaning Art
Install a narrow ledge shelf and lean framed prints for an effortlessly casual look.
- Size tip: Make the shelf about ⅔ the width of your bed and mount it 8–12 inches above the headboard.
- Style tip: Layer art in different heights and let pieces overlap for depth.
Textural or Dimensional Pieces
Think carved wood panels, woven baskets, or sculptural metal art.
- Style tip: Stick to 1–2 main colors so the textures shine without feeling chaotic.
Decorative Mirror
A mirror above the bed reflects light and can make a small bedroom feel larger.
- Size tip: Look for a mirror about ½–⅔ the width of the bed.
Hanging Height & Proportion Guidelines
Getting the proportions right makes all the difference:
- Bottom edge of art: 6–10 inches above the headboard for a connected look.
- Width of grouping: ⅔–¾ the width of the bed (queen = 40–60″, king = 54–72″).
- Eye level rule: Center of the art should sit around 57–60 inches from the floor, adjusting for tall headboards – ex: the center of mine sits closer to 68″ because of the tall headboard.
