These Salami and Mozzarella Calzones are an easy dinner idea and sure to become a family favorite!
Calzones have always been a big hit in our house from the very first time I made them. I kind of guessed they would be since calzones are pretty much a pizza folded in half and baked to delicious golden perfection. I’m pretty sure my husband, Jeremy, survived on pizza alone for several years before he met me, so I knew I had a winner winner chicken dinner before I even turned on the oven. (Or would it be winner winner pizza dinner?)
There are several things I LOVE about calzones: #1 They are easy to make. I do love homemade pizza dough, but most days I opt for a shortcut and use refrigerated pizza crust. It’s so darn convenient and a great item to keep in the fridge. #2 You can customize them however you like! This is a basic recipe for the perfect calzone (in my humble opinion), but there are TONS of ways you can change things up. Try different meats, different cheeses, add veggies… heck you could even make a dessert calzone! Hmm… I may have to try that out next! #3 They’re just plain yummy. Simple as that. Perfectly melted fresh Mozzarella, crispy golden brown crust (complete with adorable little folded edges), and a little bit of oregano sprinkled on top makes these calzones totally irresistible.
Oh, I almost forgot #4! These calzones are 100% kid-approved and perfect for little hands to hold. My boys love getting their own little calzones all to themselves!
A few words of advice about these calzones: Use fresh mozzarella! It really does make a world of difference in the flavor and melty factor, but if you can’t get any, the shredded stuff will work too. Also, make sure to cover the edges of your pizza crust really well with egg wash before baking. It helps seal in all that delicious marinara sauce and prevents any leaks from getting all over your baking sheet. Because who wants to be scrubbing dishes all night? Not this girl!
If you’ve never made a calzone before, you really have to give these a try! Experiment with different ingredients and see which kind you like best. What kind of calzone should I make next?
Salami and Mozzarella Calzones
2 – 13.8 ounce packages refrigerated pizza crust dough
1/2 cup marinara, plus more for dipping
12 slices thinly sliced salami
8 ounces fresh Mozzarella, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1 egg
2 tablespoons water
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Open one package of pizza crust and lay the dough out on a baking sheet. Place a 7-8″ round salad plate on one half of the pizza crust and cut around the edge of the plate with a sharp knife. Then repeat on the other half of the crust. You may need to stretch the dough a bit to cut both circles. Create an egg wash by cracking the egg into a small bowl and mixing in 2 tablespoons of water. Brush the egg wash around the edges of both dough circles. Spread 2 tablespoons of marinara on the bottom half of each dough, leaving a 1 inch border around the edge. Top the marinara with 3 salami slices and 2 mozzarella slices on each crust. Gently fold the top half of the dough over and pinch to seal. Brush the tops of the calzones with egg wash. Sprinkle with half the salt and oregano. Repeat with second pizza dough and bake calzones until golden brown, about 18-20 minutes. Cool 5 minutes before serving with marinara for dipping.
Makes 4 calzones.
