Patio Mini Makeover

Welcome to my patio makeover! Learn how I created an entirely new space by mixing old and new pieces with a few cans of spray paint!
Simple, inexpensive decor to create an inviting outdoor living space! at LoveGrowsWild.com

Have you ever started one tiny, little project around your house, and it turned into a big, huge, full-blown makeover? Well that is exactly what happened to me this week! I’ve been meaning to work on our outdoor living space all Summer, and I’m just now getting around to it. Never enough hours in the day, I tell ya! One of the projects on my list was to re-paint a little table we have in our enclosed porch. (Patio, breezeway, whatever you call it!)

The paint was all chippy (not in a good way), so I figured I would re-paint the table, make a new cover for the little pillow we have on the chair, and call it a day. But in between coats of spray paint, I kept looking at the porch and thinking how uninviting it was. This is the door we use most to enter our home, and all we had were a few random pieces of furniture thrown in there!
The next thing I knew I was re-arranging all kinds of furniture and coming up with a decorating scheme. It just happened. There’s got to be a name for this madness I have.
Want to see all the details of my impromptu makeover? Here we go!

We only had one chair on the porch, which made for a very lonely place to drink my morning coffee, so I grabbed some of the furniture from our outdoor patio and gave it a fresh coat of white spray paint. (Here’s the makeover I gave it last year.) All our old cushions were discolored and torn, so I picked up two new beige cushions from Lowe’s and some gorgeous navy blue fabric from Jo-ann’s to sew pillow covers. (Did you see my fabric shopping trip on Instagram?) I wanted to keep all the big things in the space neutral colors, and I can easily change out pillow covers and accessories for each season. I thought this gorgeous navy blue print added a sophisticated coastal feel that is perfect for Summer!

And here’s the little table that started this whole makeover with a fresh coat of black paint.

I wanted our outdoor space to feel like an extension of the inside of our home, so I picked a few accessories to tie the look together and make it feel really cozy. This vase fit perfectly next to one of the chairs, and but it just wasn’t the right color. My husband let our boys pick out their own gifts for me this Christmas, and the only gift they could agree on was this vase. Jeremy knew it didn’t match the color scheme of our home at all, but he figured it would make the boys happy, and I could always paint it later. So paint it I did! I just dabbed a tiny bit of white paint onto my brush and gently brushed it over the vase. I love that you can still see some of the darker colors in the vase, but it matches the chairs much better now. Easy and free project!

I also used this candle holder I already had as table decor. I thought it added to the beachy, coastal feel and would bring some beautiful ambiance in the evenings.

I found this old bucket in our garage, and used it to plant some flowers. It’s so cute and rustic, and again, FREE! Plus, since I’m a slacker and buying flowers to plant in the end of July, I scored flats of flowers for only 50 cents! Woo-Hoo!

Another total steal were these big ceramic planters I found on clearance at Jo-Ann’s. I got them for $4.00 each! I planted simple greenery in them to help balance the room. It’s such a tight space in there, and sometimes lots of bright color flowers can be overwhelming. Greenery adds some life and color, but doesn’t take away from the decor.

I couldn’t help myself when I spotted this sweet little wind chime on clearance. I hung it over the chair in the corner, and it helps draw your eye upward. It’s so peaceful listening to it blow in the breeze!

This project turned out to be way more involved than I originally planned, but I am so pleased with how it turned out! We finally have a gorgeous, welcoming entry to our home and a cozy place to spend time together. With all the neutral colors in the space, it will be super easy to give it a quick update for each season. I wonder how I will decorate for Fall…
Here’s a little before and after photo to show you the progress I made!

SO much better, right? I’d love to hear what YOU think about my patio makeover!
Now I just need to get my husband to get rid of the SUPER embarrassing pink truck we have sitting in our driveway right now… It’s seriously Barbie hot pink! But that’s a story for another day… I just had to show you this picture of our little pink truck to give you a chuckle. My husband drove this the first time he took me out on a date. He said that if he drove a pink truck and I still loved him, he knew it would be true love. But he’s strange like that : )

Have a great day everyone! You can find me on my pretty porch… Stop by and drink some tea with me : )

Wow, it looks great! I’ve been eyeing those same cushions at Lowes. Our outdoor furniture needs new cushions desperately(a new coat of paint probably wouldn’t hurt either!)I love that blue fabric! It’s my favorite thing about this. So gorgeous!

I LOVE it (and I pinned it)! I’m making over my entire house, save for the living room which I already finished. You’ve given me the courage to try painting some of the old stuff I have around here that is still useful but so doesn’t match.

A weird side angle of the living room as proof tha A weird side angle of the living room as proof that a giant TV does in fact exist in here, and we are just a normal family who loves movie nights snuggled up on the couch with the dog & football Sundays with all the yummy food during the game (one benefit of having an open concept living/dining room). I purposely placed the TV in a spot where it isn’t the main focal point of the room and designed the space to draw your eye to other much prettier things like the big picture window just to the left of this photo.

Want to try something like this in your living room? See if you can arrange the furniture so the TV isn’t the main focal point in the room, but still has visibility from the majority of your seating. Try making the focus a fireplace, window, or create a gallery wall with pretty artwork if you don’t have any standout architectural elements!

Just a little tidbit of advice I’ve learned & loved & wanted to pass along... Happy Monday, sweet friends!

Quite possibly my favorite view in the house. And Quite possibly my favorite view in the house. And also quite possibly the best place for morning snuggles, second cups of coffee, and the occasional Netflix binge. This room was “shiplapped” over 5 years ago now, but it has never felt like a passing fad or overly trendy with a mix of other vintage & traditional elements in the room. These big, wide planks have my whole heart just as much as the day we installed them back in 2015.

What’s your opinion on shiplap? In? Out? Vertical? Horizontal? Focal wall or the entire room? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

NEW! THE ARMSTRONG HOUSE LIVING ROOM REVEAL Last NEW! THE ARMSTRONG HOUSE LIVING ROOM REVEAL

Last time I shared an update on Mom’s house, I had just revealed the completed renovation, and you were able to see all the freshly painted white walls, new carpet & flooring, and a very stark blank canvas. We intentionally made this space light, bright, & neutral since 1) it’s a rental home, and we want it to appeal to a variety of styles. And 2) it’s VERY small, so the light paint makes it feel much more open & spacious than dark paint would! But all those white walls were in desperate need of a warm, cozy touch, and that’s exactly what Mom and I did…

These are a few of my favorite things... 1️⃣ These are a few of my favorite things...

1️⃣ a piece of handmade art that brings me back to my elementary schools days of paper mache creations. I saw something similar in a store with a much higher price tag & got inspired to see if I could recreate it myself. Spoiler alert: it worked & the tutorial is on my blog! search “pressed flower art” on lovegrowswild .com

2️⃣ my favorite white vases that we sold in the shop @lovegrowswildmarket this past year

3️⃣ my growing collection of interior design books. Naturally more of a minimalist, I have very few “collections” of things, but having beautiful books around the house that I can both decorate with & draw inspiration from has been one of the best gifts to myself over the last year. You can find all my current favorite design books in the link below.

Oh, and 4️⃣ a faux plant because who has time to remember to water real ones?
