Welcome back to Day #3 of the
Love Grows Wild Blog Anniversary Celebration!
I’ve been partying it up this week with some fun crafts and giveaways, and today I thought I would share with you some of the best blogging advice I have learned over the past year! When I first started Love Grows Wild, I read everything I could trying to learn how to become a better blogger, and I feel like it is important to pass that knowledge on to other newbie (or advanced!) bloggers. One of the best parts of my job is being able to cheer on and support other bloggers and having that same support in return. Some of my very sweet blog friends and I have teamed up to share with you our BEST blogging advice! So get out your pen and paper… Class is in session!
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips

The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
I read this once somewhere, and I find it to be so true! Every time someone takes a minute out of their day to send you a “Great job!” or “I love that!”, you should take the time to send them a kind message back. I know how busy life can be as a blogger, and it is not always fun to sit and answer a ton of e-mails. But sending a nice comment back can make the difference between a one-time visitor and a long-time follower! Try to make your comments as genuine as possible and find ways to strike up a conversation with your readers. Don’t be afraid to be positive and upbeat!
Which e-mail would you rather receive:

“Thanks for coming to Love Grows Wild. Come back soon.”
OR
“Hi Amy! Thanks so much for stopping by today! I love that color blue too! My whole living room is decorated with that color. Where are you from in South Carolina? I have some family that lives near Charleston. We love visiting the beach there! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!”
9) Answer your E-mail!
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
I am a compulsive organizer, so keeping my inbox clean is a must for me! But I’ve found that not everyone operates that way, and it can be very frustrating at times. Have a routine in place for answering your e-mails daily so they don’t pile up, and if you can’t get to them right away, try not to wait more than a few days to respond. It is so easy for e-mails to get lost or shuffled into the wrong folder when you don’t clean your inbox regularly, and you may miss out on a great opportunity that you’ll regret! Trust me, I’ve seen it happen!
Even when you receive e-mails or offers that you have no interest in, be courteous and send a polite “no thank you” e-mail back. It doesn’t take more than a minute, and you won’t be leaving someone hanging waiting for a response. When the roles are reversed and you’re waiting weeks for a response that never comes, you’ll understand how frustrating it can be.
8) Take time to read your favorite blogs.
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
This is one I NEED to get better at! I used to love reading my favorite blogs everyday, and they are what inspired me to start blogging in the first place! But as my blog grows and things get busy, I find less and less time to visit them anymore. When I get in a bit of a blogging “slump”, I take a break from everything and catch up on what my blog friends are up to. Not only do I get inspired by the projects or recipes I find, but I love seeing the backgrounds other bloggers use for their photos, how they word their posts, the latest trends in blogworld, etc. To WRITE a good blog, you have to READ good blogs! There is so much amazing creativity out there to be inspired by!
7) Be an honest blogger.
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
This is the basic commandment of being a blogger. Be honest and give credit where credit is due. It’s hard when you’re just starting your blog because you don’t know what “proper blog etiquette” is for adapting someone else’s recipe or borrowing an idea for a project. If you loved someone’s post and were inspired by it, let them know! Give a link back to them in your post. We share things on our blogs for people to use and be inspired by, and we all love to know when we succeeded in doing so! I believe in good karma… What goes around, comes around. Don’t steal someone else’s idea if you wouldn’t want yours stolen!
6) Create an awesome Media Kit.
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
Media kits are an important tool in selling yourself to brands and sponsors. They tell who you and your blog are, what your stats and traffic numbers are, and what you offer for advertising. Setting up a good media kit takes some time, but once you have one in place it will be a great asset to help monetize your blog! If you’re not sure what a media kit is or how to create one, you can find lots of great information just by searching on Google!
5) Make your blog easy to navigate.
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
A few months ago I updated my blog design to make it easier to navigate, and I have seen a huge increase in followers because of it! As bloggers, we assume that everyone understands what RSS means or that you’re supposed to click on those cute little social media icons, but not everyone knows those things and we miss out on new followers because of it! Make your blog design clean and uncluttered, and make it VERY easy for readers to follow your blog and your social media pages. I added social media icons to my blog header, I have my blog subscribe options in my sidebar, I give links to my social media at the end of my blog posts, and I have widgets for Twitter and Pinterest in my footer. It may sound like over-kill, but most visitors to your site are only there for a few short minutes, and you want to make sure they find how to follow you!
Do the same for your blog posts as well! If you have a giveaway you want readers to enter, put a link in your sidebar. Add a pretty collage of your favorite or most popular posts in your sidebar to grab reader’s attention. Use every square inch of your blog space to your benefit! Just remember to keep it clean and easy to read : )
4) Use social media to your advantage.
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
Study social media! Sign up for whatever social media you decide to focus on, and find out the best ways to promote yourself on those sites. Pinterest is all visual, and you want to use your best photos (vertical works best!) to generate lots of re-pins. Test out the best times to post on Facebook and how to grab people’s attention on Twitter. Learn what works best for your blog and use that to your advantage!
3) Plan, Organize, and Schedule!
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
Plan, plan, plan, and then plan some more! Get yourself a blog planner (like these ones by Infarrantly Creative, A Typical English Home, or the one I use from Say Not Sweet Anne) and take time each week to schedule yourself ahead. It takes time to come up with post ideas and see them through to fruition, and if you don’t plan ahead you’ll end up throwing things together at the last minute and not be happy with the results. How are you going to post a Mother’s Day gift idea the day before Mother’s Day and expect people to see your post and use your idea? By keeping a schedule and organizing your time, you can maximize your efficiency and enjoy stress-free blogging. Because it is supposed to be fun, right? I love being a blogger!
2) It all starts with good content and great photos.
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
Do you want the secret for the best way to grow your blog? Start with good content and great photos! It is as simple as that. You might have all the great ideas in the world for blog posts, but if you don’t have great photos to catch a reader’s eye and good content to keep them coming back for more, your blog will be slow to grow. Focus on bettering your photography skills each week and read other blogs to learn how to become a better writer. Once you have those down pat, the world is yours for the taking!
1. Blog friends are the BEST friends.
The Best Blogging Advice from your Favorite Bloggers! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips

This is hands-down the BEST advice I have to give you! The friends you will make from blogging will be an invaluable source of advice, support, and encouragement. They are the only ones who understand why you stayed up till 2 am editing photos, have a ridiculous supply of paper straws, and have no dinner ready for your family, but have the world’s best cookies posted on your blog! They cheer on your accomplishments and often times know more about your day than your real-life friends do. (Thanks Instagram!) So find your blog friends and cherish them!

—————————————————–

Speaking of blog friends, I’m teaming up with 17 of my blog buddies to bring you an AWESOME giveaway coming up on Friday! You won’t want to miss this one : )

I hope I’ve shared a few tips that you can use to help grow your blog and make your blog life a little easier! Now let’s hear some of the BEST blog advice from some other fabulous bloggers!

—————————————————–

The Best Blogging Advice from Emily of 52 Mantels! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
I think my best blogging tips is:
Don’t play the comparison game!
Seriously, it’ll make you crazy. Success comes in so many different forms and it looks different for everyone. When we try to “keep up” with what our blogging friends are doing, it leads to a lot of frustration and feelings of defeat. To maintain a healthy love for blogging (because your blog started from a passion, right??), refrain from comparing yourself to others! Give yourself the grace to be YOU. After all, you are pretty great : )
The Best Blogging Advice from Ginger of Ginger Snap Crafts! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips

Find a Tribe.
The biggest help to me has been to reach out to other bloggers and form real blogging friendships. Find a blog tribe where you feel comfortable expressing your opinions and asking for help. We are all in this together! Blogging when you know you have other bloggers supporting you and encouraging you can make all the difference!

Take good pictures!
Make sure your pictures are big, bright, and clear. You do not need a fancy camera to take good pictures either. I had a simple point and shoot the first year of blogging, and it did just fine. I still don’t own a SLR! Ha! Take your pictures in natural lighting and edit them. I used Picmonkey for my pictures, and it’s awesome. A little effort to make your pictures better can make a huge difference.

Blog with Blinders On.
When it comes to your blog, your stats, and your numbers… blog with blinders on! In other words, don’t compare your blog with someone else’s blog! We are all at different stages with our blogs, we all have different talents, and we all experience blog growth differently. Some blogs just take off and some take more time. It doesn’t do any good to compare your blog with others. Be happy for your growth and successes. Try to do better each day, and make your blog the best it can be!

Invest in a good blog design.
One of the first things I did when I started blogging was enlist the help of a good blog designer. Some bloggers can do all that themselves, but not me! I think if your blog looks and feels professional, you will attract more readers, sponsorship opportunities, and growth.

Have fun!
Don’t take blogging too seriously! Lighten up and have fun! If it’s getting stressful and too much, take a break. It’s OKAY! Blogging is a lot of work with little return on your investment at first. If you don’t enjoy it, you will get burnt out really quickly. So just try to enjoy yourself, have fun, and take breaks.

The Best Blogging Advice from Kelly of Dixie Dollar Deals! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips

The best thing I have learned from blogging is to be myself, both on my blog and in real life too. As a blogger it is easy to get caught up in what other bloggers are doing, but the thing that will set you apart is being authentic to yourself. Don’t be afraid to be different and to be a voice for an unpopular opinion or topic.

Something that has brought me great joy as a blogger is having a genuine interest in helping others. Whether I’m teaching a coupon class to help my readers save on their groceries, or meeting with other bloggers to discuss ideas and opportunities, helping others succeed has been very rewarding. Look for ways that you can contribute a solution to your reader’s problems.

The Best Blogging Advice from Hannah of We Lived Happily Ever After! at www.LoveGrowsWild.com #blogger #bloggingtips
Only Blog About What You Love.
The biggest part of blogging, for me, is having content that I love. I mean, it’s good if other people love it too. But I didn’t start this as a business, I started this because I have a passion for DIY Projects. When I first discovered Pinterest, I was like, “This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole life!!!” After that exposure, I came up with many of my tutorials on how to make stuffed animals (nesting is addicting when you have a new baby!). I never dreamed I could actually turn into a part time income. If your blog is about what you love, chances are that other people are going to love it too!
Invest in Your Blog Content.
Focus on Quality Content rather than Quantity of Content. When I look back at some of my old posts way back from when I was starting out, I cringe at how bad some of them were (please don’t go through my archives! I really need to either delete or re-do some of them!!! Haha!)
Part of it was lack of experience  Some of it was camera quality. And a lot of it was that I was focusing on quantity rather than quality due to wanting to jump start my blog. The posts that will give you the best attention and traffic (we all love visitors!) are the posts that you stop and think about. The ones that you go, “Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do that before!” That’s the most important thing. The second is making it visually beautiful. (See my recent post on how to make your images visually stunning. So stunning that a 5 month old image with only 500 re-pins would suddenly jump to 90,000 in just 3 Months!) A good idea will only get you so far. A beautiful image will get you ever farther!
Beautify Your Blog.
Make it a warm, inviting place that will make people want to stop and stick around. Don’t clutter it up with ads. But make it’s content and graphics flow. (I just posted a blogging graphics mini series about this)
Good Things Will Follow, When You Follow The Things You Love.
You can actually make a money while blogging. SHOCK! It’s not my first priority, and honestly, if you compare the hours I put into it, they pay out isn’t a whole lot. But it’s something. The best job is doing what you love to do, and it’s nice to get some income from a “hobby.”
Right now I do affiliate ads through Passion Fruit Ads. It’s a really easy, service to use. But unless you have a huge amount of followers, you probably won’t get many independent advertisers. Which is why I primarily use Google Adsense, which displays ads that are relevant to your page and posts (you can filter content too) and it pays per click. The first few months I used it, I just earned pennies. But as your traffic grows, so will your ad revenue.
We Are ALWAYS Learning!
There is always room to grow! If you have a blog, chances are you’ve looked back and seen improvement in your content and blogging skills. But even the most successful bloggers had to start somewhere. We’ve all had those “mile stone moments.” Aka, when you reached 100 or 1000 page views (or maybe I’m the only one!) So much of blogging is sticking with it, and being willing to learn along the way! It’s fun. I promise!

Thanks for all the great advice! I have a question about replying to comments: I always reply to every comment I receive, not because I feel like I should but because I truly appreciate each person who takes the time to leave a comment. I always reply on my blog, but readers might not see my replies if they don’t sign up to receive followup comments. Would you recommend emailing replies instead? I can see the benefit either way because commenting on the blog lets other readers see and join in on the discussion as well. Thanks!

That’s a great question! The best answer I have is to find blogs you like that are similar to yours, and introduce yourself. Comment on their posts and share them, send them a friendly e-mail… whatever you can do to start a blog “friendship”. I also recommend attending blog conferences you can or doing online workshops. They are great places to “meet” new bloggers just like you!

This is such wonderful advice. I feel like I am spending so much time learning the ins and outs about blogging and not actually posting enough. I spend countless hours tweaking my page. Although it wouldn’t take nearly as long if I didn’t have to stop a million times for the kiddos. I’m so bad about comparing my blog to others. There are times, I see a beautiful blog with hundreds of followers and I just feel like I’ll never get where I want to be. I’d love to get the help of a designer but it’s hard to put money into something that may not give you a return. I love to blog. I love MY blog. It just gets overwhelming sometimes. Thanks so much for this post. It’s very helpful.

Great advice!! One thing I really struggle with is comparing my blogs to other, bigger blogs out there. I have to constantly remind myself that this is something I’m doing for ME and the people I write for–it’s not a contest to compete in. I am also a huge believer in quality over quantity. As much as I want to post every day and keep those pageview numbers high, I know that my blog is much better off posting once in a while. I have four or five posts in the queue that I’m dying to share but I’m intentionally holding back!!

Wow! I am a brand new blogger and I found every one of these tips helpful! There is no way I can remember them all and so I am pinning this for sure! I can use some of these tips right away, but things like “media kits” are so far in my future (I hope!)…but the one I loved the most and is most relevant right now, is Emily’s tip about not comparing yourself to others! Have to keep that one front and center as I click through other beautiful blogs with hundreds or thousands of followers and I return to my own with less than fifty! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the valuable tips ๐Ÿ™‚ Read them all & now about to follow your blog. Sometimes I find the numbers & stats of the bigger blogs quite staggering. I would have thought 500 re-pins a great achievement!

Thanks for the blogging tips. I need to get back into blogging. I love to write, so I need to make that more of a priority. I plan on using my extra time that I will have this winter to work on it, so then I can create more interesting posts, etc. Thanks again.

Great tips. I am struggling to know if I am doing well with the quality vs. quantity. I know I will figure it out. I am going to try to slow it down but that is difficult being new and wanting to grow. How do you add the Let’s Keep in Touch social media at the end of your posts. I can’t figure it out. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed this post, AmieJo! I add the social media links at the bottom of my posts manually each time… there’s probably an easier way, but I’ve always just copied the HTML code for the “Let’s Keep in Touch” portion and added it in. Hope that helps!

Loved this post. I do have a question for you Liz. When you mention reply to all comments, do you just reply directly on your site or do you send a personal email to the person that commented?
    Thanks!

Such great advice. I especially loved the advice on connecting with other bloggers and having them as a source of inspiration and encouragement. I actually just wrote a post about that called “Connecting-Opening up a whole new world” I haven’t been blogging for very long but the other bloggers I have connected with are so amazing.
