This project/tutorial has been on my need-to-blog list for way too long, but starting the new year (and getting a pretty new blog planner) has finally motivated me to get it done! Last summer I transformed this antique armoire in our entryway from the original rustic wood finish to a soft, dusty white, and I’ve had a ton of questions on how I got this look. So I thought I’d put together a whitewashing tutorial for you guys and show you how I did it! I’ve painted quite a few pieces of furniture in our house, and this technique is one of my very favorites because it tones down the color of the wood but still allows the gorgeous wood grain to show through the paint. And it’s really easy to do!
A few months ago, I never imagined our tiny, barren patio would be a place I would actually enjoy. With a little bit of elbow grease, a few DIY projects, and some new patio furniture, we completely transformed this space, and it is hardly recognizable now! (You can see the before and after here!)
We entertain friends out here in the evenings, relax in our cozy chairs while the kids run around the yard, and soak up the sunshine surrounded by my growing garden of potted plants and flowers. This patio might be one of my favorite makeovers to date! And one of the big reasons this makeover is at the top of my list is because of the huge, beautiful, and super versatile piece of furniture we built that became the focal point of the whole patio…
… this DIY Potting Bench!
As promised in our Summer Patio Makeover I shared earlier this week, I am going to show you how I made these DIY Trellis Planters today! These are perfect for adding a little bit of privacy to your deck, garden, or patio, and this is a great project for beginners to try too!
Before we get started, I want to say thank you so much for all your sweet comments on our patio makeover. They mean the world to me, and I hope you feel inspired to tackle your own outdoor spaces now too! And yes, I will have a tutorial coming up soon for the white potting bench we built!
When I first got asked to participate in this patio makeover tour, I thought, “oh boy… how am I going to make this work?”
For the last few years, our patio has been a catch-all for random outdoor furniture, the kids’ toys, and other miscellaneous junk. Jeremy and I have plans for building a deck on the back of the house hopefully soon, so I have never really given much thought to doing anything with our patio. It’s quite small and just to the left of the patio sits a big fenced-in area for our dogs that isn’t exactly very pretty to look at. So what’s a girl to do? [Read more…]
Hello, sweet friends! The last few months here at the farmhouse have been a complete whirlwind, from a major kitchen renovation to writing my first book. I’ve been consumed with these massive projects, but today I’m going back to one of my very favorite methods of decorating and DIY. I’m turning something old and unwanted into something new and beautiful for our home, and I’m doing it for less than $50!
Take a look at our beautiful new coffee table.
This week I spent a glorious afternoon sipping on some Starbucks and shopping around the thrift stores and antique stores in town. I walked past old chairs with floral fabric, dressers with years of wear and tear, lamps, window frames, and a few benches, but nothing really caught my eye. I wandered up to the top level of the old antique warehouse where they keep the stuff that doesn’t sell and stumbled across an antique milk can hiding underneath a crooked formica tabletop with a random hook attached. Our little farmhouse kitchen got a BIG makeover! This week I’m talking about the demolition of our old kitchen, the new layout, and ways we opened up the space… you can catch up on the rest of the kitchen makeover series here!
First of all, let me just say a big, heartfelt thank you for all the sweet comments I received from you guys on our kitchen makeover reveal post last week! I read through each and every one of them and couldn’t help but get a little teary eyed at the amount of love and support we received. Now that you’ve seen what our kitchen looked like BEFORE the renovation, I’m sure you want to see how we got to the AFTER, right? As Chip Gaines would say… it’s DEMO DAY!

This kitchen renovation has by far been the biggest undertaking in our farmhouse, both financially and physically. But after months of dreaming and planning, weeks of construction, weekends painting, and the last week of our lives cleaning and decorating… I am so proud to share our finished kitchen makeover with you! With as much time and work as we’ve put into it, I can honestly say that it was worth every penny, every inch of construction dust that has settled all over the house, and every day we spent without a functioning kitchen. Since the day we moved into this house almost 4 years ago, I have always pictured a beautiful, white kitchen that is the heart of our home… a place where we gather to bake cookies and do math homework and enjoy Sunday dinners together. But most of all, I’ve longed for the day that Jeremy and I sit could together around the breakfast table next to our big, sunlight-flooded windows, enjoying our first sips of coffee together each morning as we gaze out towards our backyard and our family’s farmland. The beautiful farm that my husband spent much of his childhood playing on and the farm that we want our children to grow up knowing, learning about, and loving as well…
As promised, I’m not making you guys wait another minute to see the full reveal of the kitchen, mostly because I just can’t keep it all to myself any longer! If you haven’t seen our kitchen “before” photos yet, I highly suggest you start here first. It will make this transformation even more dramatic, trust me! Over the next few weeks, I’ll post all the details of our cabinets, tile, appliances, etc. so feel free to leave a comment with any questions you have, and I will answer them all in the posts to come! But for today, let’s just enjoy all the pretty photos…
Welcome to our beautiful, new “modern farmhouse” kitchen!

The day is finally here, my friends… I’m kicking off our big, huge, super exciting, highly-anticipated Kitchen Makeover Series!!
We started planning this makeover last summer when I first found out about the book deal. We had always kicked around the idea of remodeling our kitchen at some point, but after we accepted an offer to write a book all about decorating our farmhouse, we decided it was time to kick our plans into high gear and get the job done. Jeremy and I are used to tackling most projects ourselves, but we knew the kitchen would be a massive undertaking, and with the book deadline just a few short months away, we knew we had to bring in some help.
We went through Lowe’s for part of our bathroom remodel, and I was super pleased with their customer service, so we decided to go with them again for the kitchen. They have a project specialist who worked one-on-one with us to plan the design, help us pick out products, order everything we needed, and organize the entire project through to the end. She set us up with a PHENOMENAL contractor, and they got started just after Christmas.
But before we get to all the fun makeover stuff, I suppose we better start with “the before”, huh? Brace yourselves, guys. This little farmhouse kitchen was in desperate need of a makeover! And I apologize in advance for the quick, poorly-lit photos I had about 5 minutes to snap before the sun set on the night before kitchen demolition started. If you haven’t read the post I wrote about prepping for our kitchen reno yet, I recommend you stop there next!
So let me take you on a little tour of the farmhouse… [Read more…]
