Christmas Lights at Night

Here we are just days away from Christmas, and I find myself wanting to savor every moment of families gathering and evenings around the Christmas tree and holiday traditions and the joy on my boys’ sweet faces. The holidays can be hectic and at times stressful, but I think there is nothing more peaceful and serene than our little farmhouse all lit up on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa to arrive. The glow of the tree and candles burning all around as we set out sugar cookies and milk and read The Polar Express and snuggle into bed… Christmas music softly playing in the background… I wish we could bottle up the feeling of those moments to remember all year round.

Each year I join a group of friends to share a little tour of our homes at nighttime and try to capture the magic of Christmas Eve for you to enjoy. If you are here from Thistlewood Farms, welcome! I hope you feel the warmth of our home, the smiles on our faces, and the peace and beauty of this wonderful season. Step inside our farmhouse, sweet friends.

Christmas Entryway

It’s hard to believe that we’re less than a week away from Christmas now, but I think I’m just about ready. I have a few stocking stuffers to pick up, my mom and I are going to have our annual cookie baking day, and then we’re ready for the big day! I’m sure you’re busy finishing up your Christmas to-do lists too, but I wanted to stop in real quick and share one last space in our home decorated for the holidays.

FEATURING YOUR FARMHOUSE CHARM PROJECTS

Hi, sweet friends! In just a few short weeks it will be one year since the release of my first book, A Touch of Farmhouse Charm, and it’s hard to believe time has flown by so quickly. It feels like just yesterday I was signing my contract and spending the next five months up to my eyeballs in a complete kitchen renovation, creating seventy new projects for the book, using every spare second I had to write tutorials and working on styling and photographing my entire house and every project in the book. Phew… I’m exhausted and stressed out just typing that and remembering how crazy those months were! Now you know why book number two hasn’t been started yet haha!

CHRISTMAS DESSERT TABLE IN THE DINING ROOM

I’ve always said that since becoming a mom, Christmas is even more special as I watch my little ones experience the joys of the holiday for the first time. We bake cookies together and listen to Christmas music and wrap gifts and hang ornaments on the tree and write letters to Santa and drive around at night looking at Christmas lights… so many traditions and memories we make during this wonderful time of year. I think as parents we want to make these moments as special as possible for our kids, and as I started decorating our dining room for Christmas this week, I decided to skip the fancy table setting and surprise the boys with something totally magical and very memorable!

OUR BEAUTIFUL NEW TREE

I have a Christmas tree confession to make. Last year I was inspired to do a very simple, minimalist tree in our living room and only added a few white poinsettias and large snowy pinecones on the tree. In my head, it was going to look like this amazing Scandinavian beauty, but instead the tree turned out looking bare and boring and cheap. I should have known better than to try doing this look on our very old tree that has definitely seen better days, but needless to say I was pretty disappointed in the way it turned out and barely included it in any pictures I shared last year. I know that how our tree looks is far from the most important thing during Christmas and we are our own worst critics, but it’s something I get so excited to do each year, and last year was a let down for sure.

This year I definitely wanted to redeem myself, and I am so excited to be part of the 12 Bloggers of Christmas with Balsam Hill with my beautiful new tree!

Painted Mantel Makeover

Now that all the Christmas decorations are finished around the house, this week I was finally able to tackle some projects that have been waiting for some attention. I spotted this mantel months ago at the antique store where I have my booth, and even though it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, it had a good price and I knew I could customize it later to fit the style of our house. After some design modifications and a creamy coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint, this mantel is now even better than I imagined!
