Dreaming of a backyard that feels more like a retreat than just a patch of grass? You don’t need a full renovation to turn your outdoor space into a cozy hangout perfect for relaxing, entertaining, dining, or just soaking up the season.
Whether you have a small patio or a full backyard, creating a cozy, functional, and stylish outdoor living room is easier than you think. Here are 9 practical ways to design an outdoor space you’ll actually want to use all summer long – and all the details on updates we’ve made to ours!

Define Your Purpose + Create Zones
Start by asking: How do we want to use this space? Will it be for dining, relaxing, entertaining, cooking — or all of the above? Let your vision guide the layout. Use rugs, furniture groupings, or planters to define zones and create a natural flow.
Choose Materials That Can Take the Heat
Outdoor furniture takes a beating, so durability matters. Look for weather-resistant, rust-proof, and UV-protected materials like teak, powder-coated metal, polywood, or all-weather wicker. Cushions with quick-dry foam and washable covers are a must — because real life (and spills) happen.

- I put a fresh coat of white paint on our wooden Adirondack chairs this spring, but I think I have my mind made up to switch to Polywood for these too next year!
Blur the Lines Between Indoors + Out
Treat your outdoor space like an extension of your home. Use similar colors, furniture styles, and cozy elements like throw pillows, blankets, and rugs to create a seamless transition. Indoor/outdoor textiles have come a long way — they look and feel like the real thing but are made to withstand the elements.
Layer in Lighting for Mood + Function
Lighting sets the tone. String lights add charm, lanterns bring warmth, and path or step lights create safety after dark. Convenient smart lighting with dimmers and timers allows you to control the mood and extend your time outdoors.
- We added this outdoor light fixture to our gazebo this year and love how it makes the deck feel like another cozy room in our home. I linked the flush mount, hanging chandelier, 3 light, and 5 light version of this fixture: HERE
- I installed these solar power deck/step lights around the bottom of the deck railing, and they add just the right amount of light at night to see where you’re walking.
- These string lights around the gazebo are LED and shatterproof and make evenings out here feel SO magical. They’ve survived 5+ years of Indiana weather so far (I never take them down) and work perfectly still!
- Affordable candle lanterns without glass – who has time to clean that?
Embrace Nature
Plants make everything better. Use potted trees, container gardens, herbs, vines, or grasses to bring life, texture, and privacy to your space. Add a water feature — even a small tabletop fountain — for a peaceful, spa-like vibe.
- Want my secret for stunning planters that don’t get a lot of sun? Here’s my go-to shade recipe.
- My favorite planters I’m slowly collecting – they’re indestructible, made from recycled materials, and have a self-watering internal reservoir (which means your plants are less likely to die if you forget about them for a day or ten).
- Our woven urn plants from Target are discontinued, but I rounded up several similar options HERE

Think Through the Elements
Whether it’s mid-day sun or a surprise summer storm, having coverage keeps the space usable and comfortable. Add shade with a pergola, gazebo, umbrella, or tree canopy to keep things comfortable in the heat of the day. Avoid placing seating directly in a wind tunnel or in the harshest afternoon sun. A sheltered space means you’ll get more use from your setup — even when the weather isn’t perfect.

Maximize the View — or Block It Out
Orient seating to face your best views — a garden, shady tree, or sunset. Add privacy as needed using hedges, tall planters, or outdoor curtains to hide eyesores.
Add Warmth + Extend the Season
Outdoor living doesn’t have to end when the sun goes down or the temperature drops. A fire pit or outdoor fireplace (on a safe surface) creates an instant gathering spot and helps you use the space well into fall. Or try flameless candles or tabletop torches for cozy ambiance without the flame.
Make It Work for Real Life
A few thoughtful, functional additions can make all the difference:
- A console table or drink cart for serving food and entertaining – the wood grain on this console will fool you, but it’s weatherproof high-density plastic!
- Deck boxes or cabinets to store cushions, games, and garden tools
- Sunscreen, bug spray, and citronella candles always on hand – been using this deet-free plant-based bug spray all summer!
- A bluetooth speaker to set the vibe
