One major benefit of moving my bedroom down to the main level was gaining this big walk-in closet, but it needed some work to make it functional. I envisioned a bright, clean space with tons of storage for clothes, accessories, and shoes. I utilized as much vertical space as possible, installing a 7 foot tall shoe rack, and re-purposed the existing shelf boards all the way up to the ceiling, keeping the project on a small budget with just a gallon of white paint. I added a rod for hanging clothes on both sides with a dresser underneath for additional storage of smaller items. The symmetry helps the small space feel organized, even with so much stuff packed inside. It doesn’t have high end custom cabinetry and fancy lighting, but it’s my perfect “girl” space where I keep all my favorite things to get ready for date nights and business meetings and cozy nights in. Welcome to my new closet!

Because I used the back wall for shoe storage, I was able to fit two small fabric drawer dressers underneath my hanging clothes on either side. I shared a video assembling the dresser here if you want a closer look, but I think it would be perfect for a kids room because there are no drawer slides that can break. They’re not the most beautiful thing to look at compared to a nice wooden dresser, but you can barely see them underneath my hanging clothes and they were very affordable, especially needing two.
I used these for socks, undergarments, bathing suits, leggings, purses, belts, and other small items.
The massive 7 foot tall shoe rack was actually very easy to put together and comes with straps so you can secure it to the wall. However, I didn’t exactly measure everything out very well when planning the layout and had to move some of the shelving and both clothing rods after I already had them installed to accommodate this giant storage solution for my giant shoe collection. You can watch that video here.
The shoe rack comes in different sizes in case you don’t have 7-8 feet of wall space to spare (and also other color options). And although it comes with 12 shelves, I opted to leave a few out towards the top so I could store taller boots and also leave one shelf open for jewelry, perfume, and a small mirror.
I used to have a bunch of pretty stands and trays to display all my jewelry, which was nice, but felt cluttered and messy. I wanted a more compact way to store all my jewelry, and these pretty velvet trays were the perfect solution. You can order different types of trays to hold necklaces, earrings, bracelets, watches, sunglasses, or even blank trays to store larger items or a collection of your most used everyday accessories. I haven’t ordered the earring tray yet, so I’m still using this earring holder.
You can’t really see it in these photos, but I was able to hang all my hats underneath one of the shelves with this space-saving organizer. It comes in a pack of two, and you can mount it on the wall or under a shelf like I did. You can see how I installed it here.
One thing I definitely recommend if you want to give your closet a little upgrade is getting rid of all the random hangers you’ve collected over the years and switching to one style. It’s such a small thing that feels silly and unnecessary, but it’s one of those simple joys that just makes your home and your day feel a little better. I can’t really explain it, but your closet just instantly feels more organized and updated. Here are the ones I have.
