Spring Master Bedroom

I think the last few times I’ve shared my master bedroom here on the blog was during the holidays or sometime when it was all decorated for a certain season. So I wanted to share a little update of what my bedroom currently looks like in everyday life, plus a few updates I’ve made in here recently… bedding, wall art, plants, and pillows to name a few!

My bedroom is probably one of my favorite rooms to photograph in the house because it has quite a few features that really make the photographs pop… the soft, romantic lace curtains hung from a (faux) wood beam, the lines of bright white shiplap on the walls (which we installed with this tutorial), the contrast of the strong iron bed frame against all the white in the room… it all comes together beautifully through my camera lens. But the camera also points out what the room is lacking when I upload the photos on my computer and start to edit them. For a long time I’ve just had a basic white quilt on my bed and usually an extra throw blanket draped over the top. But this winter the thin quilt wasn’t very warm, and in photos the quilt all by itself looks very flat and hard. At the end of a long day when you want to crawl into your bed and sleep, you want it to look soft and cozy and plush, not like a hard cot with a tiny blanket.

So to add an extra layer of softness and warmth to my bed, I bought a down alternative comforter and a feminine ruffled duvet in white. What a HUGE difference this made! It feels like I’m sleeping in a fancy hotel bed every night, and the soft ruffles make the bed look so much more cozy and inviting.

A Mini Office in the Entryway

A few weeks ago, I shared some changes in our entryway that all started with a little bit of spring decorating and ended up snowballing into hours of projects and furniture rearranging. This space has been craving a fresh, new look for quite some time, so when inspiration struck me that day, I just went with it! I’ve shared one half of our entryway by the front door many times here on the blog, but it’s been awhile since I’ve shared what the OTHER side of the entryway looks like… mostly because I haven’t fully loved the way it looked and couldn’t figure out what I wanted here. I know, I know… I should practice what I preach and embrace the journey. Decorating is a wonderful never-ending process for me, and I should document all the stages of our adorable, little farmhouse, even if it isn’t “perfect” in my eyes just yet.

But after my late night styling session a few weeks ago, I’m ridiculously happy with how this side of the entryway (which is right next to the kitchen) is starting to look!

A Cozy Farmhouse Entryway

Do you ever start on one little project, and it ends up leading into fifteen others? That’s exactly what happened to me last week! Ever since I put away the Christmas decorations, the armoire in our entryway has been pretty bare other than a knit blanket I always keep on one shelf. I just never got around to redecorating it after the holidays. So I decided to quickly try and style the armoire shelves the other day…

A Grown-up Playroom Update

You’ve probably noticed that there are a few rooms in my little farmhouse that you’ll see over and over again on the blog and some rooms that rarely, if ever, get put in the spotlight. Let’s be honest, my 7 and 11 year old boys don’t exactly keep their playroom “photo ready” on a regular basis (as they shouldn’t!), so it hasn’t been featured much over the last almost five years. When we first moved into this house, I spent a ton of time creating the perfect adorable playroom for my little babies who were only 2 and 6 at the time. It was colorful and fun and had places to store all their books and tractors and trains and coloring supplies, and looking back on that “design” now, it makes me laugh a little at how far my style has come. We all have to start somewhere, right? 😉

The playroom slowly… and I mean VERY slowly… evolved over the last few years as my style changed, and I swapped out the bright pops of color for a more neutral palette that matched the rest of the house. Those of you who have my book, A Touch of Farmhouse Charm, got to see the first playroom photos I’ve taken in years, and although that design was a huge step in the right direction, there were still a few things I wanted to tweak and change. Imagine that… Liz wanting to change something!

One of the problems I had with the playroom was the functionality of the design. I no longer have little babies who want to set up their train tracks and drive their tractors around on the floor. I have one boy who is just two short years away from being a teenager and another little cutie who is already pushing the pre-teen years, and their needs for a playroom are much different now.

Winter Living Room Refresh

A beautiful farmhouse living room that feels cozy, bright, and totally charming!

Hi, sweet friends! I’ll admit it was a little depressing at first when all the Christmas decor came down and was packed away for the year. Part of me loves the clean, uncluttered blank slate, and the other part of me misses the coziness and light and warmth. The lights on the tree and wreaths in all the windows and presents waiting to be opened and cookies baking in the oven… it’s pretty hard to top that feeling, especially once the dreary, cold winter weather sets in.

So I decided to update the living room a little bit to help ease the transition with some new pieces from Birch Lane, and I’m really excited to show you the changes. It looks so much brighter in here to me now, and I finally feel like I’ve nailed the look I’ve always wanted in our living room. What a difference swapping out just a few little items can make!

Cozy & Beautiful – The How to Decorate Handbook

Good morning, sweet friends! The current state of the farmhouse is pretty chaotic as I’m slowly transitioning our fall decor into the holidays, so I wanted to share something really exciting with you today. Have you ever wished there was a handbook that perfectly mapped out how to decorate your home? One that could tell you how to find the right style for your home and family? And where to start and how to stop wasting money on the wrong things?

The Cozy & Beautiful Handbook was created by my dear friend, Shannon Acheson, and after reading through it the past couple weeks, I think this handbook is exactly what we’ve all been searching for.
