Decorating Lessons I’ve Learned – Curtains

Over the last four years of writing this blog, I have given our little farmhouse a complete makeover from top to bottom… everything from major kitchen and bathroom renovations, to painting every last wall (at least twice), to replacing all the light fixtures, and more. Now that the sawdust has settled around here, I finally have had a chance lately to look back on all that we’ve done and all the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I am a self-taught interior decorator, and I’ve had to learn a lot of lessons the hard (and sometimes expensive) way. As I was hanging new curtains in my office a few months ago, I thought to myself, “Boy, I’ve come a long way from the first set of curtains I hung in here! Maybe people would enjoy seeing some of the decorating mistakes I’ve made in the past and the lessons I learned from them…”

So today, I’m starting a new decorating series! Every month or so, I’ll share a new “Decorating Lessons I’ve Learned” post that shows changes we’ve made to our house over the years and lessons you can apply in your own home! Basically, I’ve already made the mistakes so that you don’t have to. : )

Decorating 101 - In this lesson, you'll learn all about curtains and the best way to hang them! Great tips from a self-taught interior decorator!

Kitchen Makeover – Before & After

The beginning of 2016 started off with a bang in our house (literally), as we began renovations on our dated farmhouse kitchen. This was by far the biggest and most expensive project we’ve tackled in this house, and I carefully designed every single detail to give us a functional, spacious, family-friendly kitchen on a budget that we could afford.

We opened up the wall between our kitchen and living room, which instantly made the kitchen feel so much bigger, brighter, and more open. We replaced all the cabinets, flooring, countertops, and lighting, and we even tore out the old chimney behind one wall to make room for a large pantry cabinet. I’ve posted about each step of our renovations over the last few months (you can see them all here!), but today I thought it would be fun to end our incredible kitchen makeover journey with some great before and after photos, which REALLY give you an idea of how far this little kitchen has come! It still shocks me how big this transformation was!

Let’s take a trip down memory lane…

We’re finally at the end of our kitchen makeover series, and today I get to share the fun stuff with you guys… the finishing touches! Dealing with electrical issues, uneven ceilings, and other renovation realities are not my idea of a good time, but when the contractor finally gave me the green light to pick out lighting, a sink faucet, cabinet hardware, and all the decorative elements, I was more than happy to do some shopping. Let’s dive into the details of our biggest makeover to date!

Kitchen Makeover – Appliances

Our little farmhouse kitchen got a BIG makeover! This week I’m sharing the appliances we chose and why… you can catch up on the rest of the kitchen makeover series here!

Today’s post is sponsored by GE Appliances, but all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. |  Now that we’ve talked about most of the design choices in our kitchen makeover, let’s talk about something more on the functional side… appliances!

The appliances we had in our previous kitchen worked fine, but we decided that if we were going to spend the money on a new, beautiful kitchen, we wanted new appliances to go with it. We’ve only ever owned hand-me-down appliances, and I’m pretty sure the microwave we used for the last 8 years is the smallest model ever invented. Only certain size plates would fit inside and actually spin on the turntable. I think it would be better suited for a college dorm room than a household of four! But we lived with them happily until we could afford a big kitchen renovation like this, and I am SO happy with the appliances we picked out. I had no idea how much they would change the way we use our kitchen!
