Winter Living Room Refresh

A beautiful farmhouse living room that feels cozy, bright, and totally charming!

Hi, sweet friends! I’ll admit it was a little depressing at first when all the Christmas decor came down and was packed away for the year. Part of me loves the clean, uncluttered blank slate, and the other part of me misses the coziness and light and warmth. The lights on the tree and wreaths in all the windows and presents waiting to be opened and cookies baking in the oven… it’s pretty hard to top that feeling, especially once the dreary, cold winter weather sets in.

So I decided to update the living room a little bit to help ease the transition with some new pieces from Birch Lane, and I’m really excited to show you the changes. It looks so much brighter in here to me now, and I finally feel like I’ve nailed the look I’ve always wanted in our living room. What a difference swapping out just a few little items can make!

Cozy & Beautiful – The How to Decorate Handbook

Good morning, sweet friends! The current state of the farmhouse is pretty chaotic as I’m slowly transitioning our fall decor into the holidays, so I wanted to share something really exciting with you today. Have you ever wished there was a handbook that perfectly mapped out how to decorate your home? One that could tell you how to find the right style for your home and family? And where to start and how to stop wasting money on the wrong things?

The Cozy & Beautiful Handbook was created by my dear friend, Shannon Acheson, and after reading through it the past couple weeks, I think this handbook is exactly what we’ve all been searching for.

Our New Farmhouse Entryway

Our living room and dining room are the first spaces you see when you walk into our farmhouse, and while I do love a lot of the things we’ve done in these rooms, I’ve always only been about 90% happy with either space. These two rooms have been tough for me to design and decorate for some reason. Our living room is open to the dining room, kitchen and front hallway, so we have a lot of traffic coming through this space. Plus we also have baseboard heaters on a few walls and a big picture window that makes furniture placement challenging. And then our dining room happens to also be our entryway, since we use this exterior door to come and go instead of the main front door. Unfortunately this space is pretty tight and narrow, and for the last few years I’ve tried to cram our large farmhouse dining table AND space for entryway storage in here. We made it work for a few years, but this summer I started playing around with the furniture placement and LOVE the way this space flows now. Welcome to our new entryway!

Decorating Lessons I’ve Learned – Curtains

Over the last four years of writing this blog, I have given our little farmhouse a complete makeover from top to bottom… everything from major kitchen and bathroom renovations, to painting every last wall (at least twice), to replacing all the light fixtures, and more. Now that the sawdust has settled around here, I finally have had a chance lately to look back on all that we’ve done and all the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I am a self-taught interior decorator, and I’ve had to learn a lot of lessons the hard (and sometimes expensive) way. As I was hanging new curtains in my office a few months ago, I thought to myself, “Boy, I’ve come a long way from the first set of curtains I hung in here! Maybe people would enjoy seeing some of the decorating mistakes I’ve made in the past and the lessons I learned from them…”

So today, I’m starting a new decorating series! Every month or so, I’ll share a new “Decorating Lessons I’ve Learned” post that shows changes we’ve made to our house over the years and lessons you can apply in your own home! Basically, I’ve already made the mistakes so that you don’t have to. : )

Decorating 101 - In this lesson, you'll learn all about curtains and the best way to hang them! Great tips from a self-taught interior decorator!

Kitchen Makeover – Before & After

The beginning of 2016 started off with a bang in our house (literally), as we began renovations on our dated farmhouse kitchen. This was by far the biggest and most expensive project we’ve tackled in this house, and I carefully designed every single detail to give us a functional, spacious, family-friendly kitchen on a budget that we could afford.

We opened up the wall between our kitchen and living room, which instantly made the kitchen feel so much bigger, brighter, and more open. We replaced all the cabinets, flooring, countertops, and lighting, and we even tore out the old chimney behind one wall to make room for a large pantry cabinet. I’ve posted about each step of our renovations over the last few months (you can see them all here!), but today I thought it would be fun to end our incredible kitchen makeover journey with some great before and after photos, which REALLY give you an idea of how far this little kitchen has come! It still shocks me how big this transformation was!

Let’s take a trip down memory lane…
